This Week's Speaker:
Final-6

Dr. John Runic

Dick Duke introduced today's speaker, Dr. John Runic, Ph.D, associate professor of Mechanical and Energy Engineering at Indiana Tech. He holds a bachelors and masters of science from Purdue University. Together he and his wife, Kathy, have two children.

Indiana Tech has started a energy engineering program and via grant monty, the school has purchased a small scale wind turbine. The turbine should be operational by April 1. It is a 10 kilowatt ReDriven Power Inc. wind turbine with a 4mph start-up speed. It will stand 120 feet tall with a hydraulic tower which means that maintenance can be performed by maneuvering the tower to lie on the ground as opposed to having to use a cherry picker. It has an electric yaw that senses wind direction allowing the turbine to be tailless. The blades are 13 feet long meaning that the blades have a 26 foot sweep. The foundation for the tower was laid last summer and includes 56 cubic years of concrete.

The capacity factor of wind energy has been called into question. But John explained that coal is only 30-40% efficient. So, for example, imagine that 100 coal cars are heading to a power plant. One of every three cars makes it to the plant; the others are wasted. Gas energy is, according to John, even worse. Wind energy, however, is 59% efficient and most companies can get 60-70% of the potential 59% energy available. This is because the fuel (wind) ones to the plant ready made (in other words, it's already wind).
