On
Saturday evening, August 22, 2009, our AW Rotary had its inaugural “Date
Night”, with 22 people participating (counting significant others).
We met at Hall’s Guesthouse Grille at 5:00 for dinner and
conversation. The food was
great and the fellowship even better!
After dinner, we went to the Coldwater Crossing Theater Complex where most of us saw the movie, “500 Days of Summer” (yes, a chick flick!). From there, several of us polished off the evening in the lounge of Hall’s Factory Restaurant with cheese/crackers and cocktails.
All in all, this was a very successful first time event and one that we will repeat at least once or twice more this year.

Our inaugural 5K
Run/Walk to Help Eradicate Polio was a huge success.
Although the day dawned with bright sunshine and some tough heat
and humidity, we were pleasantly greeted with 140 registered runners.
For an inaugural race of this type, this was an incredibly large
number. We are already
planning on a second annual run on August 21, 2010, and hope to be
pushing 200 runners.
The best
news is that because of the success of this event Anthony Wayne Rotary
was able to easily reach its goal of a $2,000 contribution to Polio
Plus.

We wish to thank all of our club members who participated in and/or helped with this event; and we owe a big debt of gratitude to our Leo and Northrop Interact Clubs for their help with registration, timing, and aid station help. Last but not least, we thank our race sponsors for their financial contributions.

The Anthony Wayne Rotary Club of Fort Wayne has recently donated $2,500 to help with the installation of a water tank in Honduras, a project that is being sponsored by the Delphi, Indiana Club. Getting potable water to underdeveloped countries is a high priority of Rotary International as Rotary clubs around the world help to promote the ideal of “service above self” which is the Rotary motto.
Anthony Wayne Rotary has also made a contribution of $1,000 to the Fort Wayne Children’s Foundation, a local organization that is working to fight child abuse in all of its various facets.
The president of Anthony Wayne Rotary, Barrie Peterson, states that these two projects are his signature projects to help meet local and international Rotary goals. Other projected projects for this club in the coming Rotary year will include: a 5K run/walk event to raise money for Rotary International’s ongoing fight to eradicate polio; the distribution of dictionaries to all of the local third graders in the greater Fort Wayne area; sizeable donations to the local office of World Relief and to the Community Harvest Food Bank; cleaning, polishing, and restoring monuments at Memorial Park; helping financially and on site with Indian Village Elementary School as our official adopted school; honoring local student-athletes and other student leaders, culminating with the awarding of two $4,000 scholarships to area seniors; and lots of other service projects and fellowship activities.
The other officers for the Anthony Wayne Rotary Club for the 2009-2010 Rotary year include President-Elect H. Lee Bays, Vice President Aron Dellinger, Secretary Dick Noll, and Treasurer John Smith.

An Example of Service Above Self:
"I shall begin my march for Camp
tomorrow morning. It was not in my power to move until I could procure
shoes for the troops almost barefoot."
